The Practice of Freedom
A year-long facilitated Practice Circle based on Byron Brown’s Soul Without Shame: A Guide to Liberating Yourself from the Judge Within.
Working with the Inner Critic
The Inner Critic can appear as a demanding voice, a subtle judgement or a persistent sense that something about us needs to be corrected. Its influence can shape how we work, relate, make decisions and respond to difficulty—often without our recognising it.
Through shared reading, guided practices and honest reflection, participants will learn to recognise the Inner Critic more clearly and explore a different way of relating to its judgements, demands and prohibitions. The intention is not to silence or defeat it, but to develop greater presence, understanding and freedom of choice.
How the Circle Works
The group meets online each month across the year. Each gathering brings a section of Soul Without Shame into conversation with participants’ lived experience.
Between meetings, participants work with practices from the book and reflect on what they notice. Three structured peer-reflection periods provide additional opportunities to explore the material with another participant.
The circle is intentionally small, creating space for meaningful participation, continuity and trust. This is a committed year-long process rather than a series of standalone workshops.

Who this Circle Is For
This circle is for people who want to understand the influence of the Inner Critic and explore a less compelled, more compassionate way of relating to themselves.
Participants need to be willing to attend regularly, work with the practices in Soul Without Shame, take part in the peer-reflection periods and contribute thoughtfully to a small, confidential group. Each participant will need their own copy of the book.
